The innovative Chagrin Valley PHA Horse Show (CVPHA) is horsing around with books in an effort to promote reading and riding to children. As part of its education mission, the CVPHA developed a new reading incentive program, “Reading and Riding”, to encourage reading for children from Kindergarten through 5th grade, while learning about horses and horse sports.

The equestrian organization is joining the statewide effort to improve the reading skills of Ohio's children and making it fun along the way. "Children who read succeed and if they are motivated by horses or other incentives, our program "Reading and Riding" will be a success," said board member and program organizer Betty Weibel.

“We were motivated to promote reading and make it fun for Ohio’s youngsters by Governor Taft’s popular initiative, OhioReads. We are offering kids who read just five horse books free tickets to the Merrill Lynch Hunter Jumper Classic and a chance to win other prizes,” explained Weibel. “The program is being introduced this year and offered to the community through libraries, schools and special events as a group activity. We are also making the program available to individual children via our web site. After the horse show, the program will continue year-round!”

To encourage reading and an interest in horses the CVPHA’s web site, www.ClevelandHorseShow.com , offers a library list of horse books with appropriate reading levels and library classifications. A “Reading Round-up” flyer challenges children to read five books and submit their form for free horse show tickets. Groups will be offered a special visit from the show’s new mascot, Hunter, a friendly gray costume character horse that hands out stickers and appears with a rider who reads kids a horse story and answers questions about horses and riding.
